Alperstein and Diener Salutes our American Servicemembers on Memorial Day

The firm expresses thanks for the dedication and sacrifice of all members of the armed services and the Department of Defense, especially on this Memorial Day holiday.

A Brief History of Memorial Day

On May 5, 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) established “Decoration Day.” The day was chosen as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30, as it is believed he chose this date because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages everyone to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.
